During the past few weeks I’ve spent most of my time driving around England looking at some beautiful allotments. I’ve been a judge in Britain’s Best Allotment competition as part of National Allotments Week which ends this weekend.
It’s interesting to see people use their allotments not only a place to grow food but a place to relax and get away from the worries of the world. They are communities within the boundaries of the allotment sites. Friends meet for tea and chat about growing techniques over a packet of biscuits, or two. Despite the damp weather conditions I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
The winning allotment has been decided and congratulations goes to the Hills family in Manchester. The plot brings the family together and the children had mini-plots of their own to encourage them to learn about vegetables and nature.
“We have learnt to grow what we love to eat- the boys eat fresh crops of strawberries, sorrel, peas, tomatoes and even chillies. We like trying new things- purple carrots, peas and cauliflower, yellow courgettes, red gooseberries, cucamelons and strawberry sticks to name a few.”
